Certification through such institutions allows HSE practitioners to successfully demonstrate safety competency and to maintain their credentials through continual recertification.

HSE practitioners need to advise management and employees, or their representatives, on HSE matters with authority, independently. This requires their competent engagement with all role players, both in and outside the organisation. To perform these functions adequately, HSE practitioners need to be suitably qualified, with appropriate membership of professional bodies.
