In June last year we published an article on the importance of finding and working with responsible suppliers. That blog dealt with suppliers who are actively working towards processes with a low impact on the environment, whether it was ensuring low carbon emissions or ensuring hazardous materials are disposed of properly. We included a helpful checklist, which you can find here.

 

Ethical corporate responsibility doesn’t stop there

Last month, a Sky News investigation revealed how mining companies in the DRC are exploiting children as young as four years’ old to work in their mines. For less than 8p a day, these children are sent into hand-dug tunnels with no protective equipment and forced to mine for the cobalt needed in the manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries found in smartphones and electric cars. These same tunnels frequently collapse but the children are too scared not to venture into them as they are threatened with physical abuse if they don’t.
